2005 01 17 Pipe Install, Last SectionsToday the last two sections of pipe went into the ground. This was at the "head" of the pipe, where the open stream that runs along our road goes underground.. Working at this end of the pipe was very sloppy. Part of this was due to the rain, but part of it is I think due to the old pipe having cracks. Water continually seeped out of the old pipe and the ground here was always saturated starting about 6 feet down. A real mess. The weather was clear and very cold all day today. The low last night was in the teens, and the high was probably just a bit above freezing. IN the early morning the earth was frozen hard, but by mid morning it had been working into really nasty glop.
Some more digging for the pipe section shown. Dropping it in.. Sealing the joints after getting it seated in gravel. So digging for the second and last section can go in. Pushing the box along again. This is the muck that is coming out of the trench. It's nasty and smelly. It looked to me as if a dozen tyrannosauruses went out to eat and all had the same very bad brontosaurus for dinner.. The pipe is blocked with a large metal plate to keep it from filling up with rock and mud. Once the digging is done they move the plate an inch so the water drains out, and then drop in a lot of gravel. And the last section of pipe goes in! And is seated in gravel. And finally, some of the construction equipment and material leaves. Tomorrow more digging for the headwall, and the riprap for the tail of the pipe should start to arrive.
